DVD Production Service

DVD duplication & DVD replication are the processes for copying DVD ‘s.
The reproduction of DVD ’s including the mastering, the conversion of MPEG , AVI , MP3 and other standards is what we can do for you. Depending upon your quantities we will use:

  • DVD-R : a ‘burning’-process is used for limited quantities (below 300 units).
  • DVD : for medium to large quantities, we use a ‘pressing’-process.

DVD Replication

DVD ‘s impact

DVD ‘s offer enormous memory capacity for pictures,

DVD Replication

DVD pressing

DVD Replication is based upon a ‘pressing’ process. This technology is used for quantities from 300 to 10.000 ‘s of units You can find more technical details by clicking on ‘how does a DVD work?’.

DVD Manufacturing

The manufacturing process is similar to that of CD-ROM where as a glass “stamper” is formed in order to produce a nickel “stamper”, which in turn makes the discs.
The final DVD disc can be a DVD-5, DVD-10 or DVD-9 depending on the data size and whether a double-sided disc is acceptable.

Advantages

  • Very cost effective for larger quantities (300 units and up).

Disadvantages

  • Because of the amount of time to set up each job, to produce the glass master etc., this method usually requires 8 to 10 working days to complete.
  • There are initial set up fees for film and artwork for each project.

DVD technology allows for storage capacities 14 times greater than CD-ROM ‘s: from 4.7 to 17 Gigabytes. The encoding process converts both audio (MPEG-2 files) and video (AC-3 files) to DVD format. Your disc can contain data on one or both sides and also has a "dual-level" feature available to increase the amount of information.

MJK DP is one of the few replication facilities that do accept DVD-R general masters.

DVD-R (General) (4.7GB discs)
The DVD-Rs should be written in Disc At Once Mode. For Discs which need CSSEncryption and/or Macrovision, a DLT is required

Data must be identified as DVD-5, DVD-9 or DVD-10. In case of DVD-9 and DVD-10, data must be further identified as layer 0 or layer 1.

  • DLT must be recorded with ANSI labeling
  • Do not write DLTs in compressed mode
  • Take care not to drop DLTs – this can cause internal damage and render the tape unreadable
  • DVD-R are currently only available in DVD-5 capacity mode

Creating DVD titles

The production process comprises of authoring, pre-mastering and manufacturing. Multimedia titles for DVD can be created using similar tools to those used for CD-ROM titles such as Macromedia Director, Flash, Java etc. Your target audience could be people with DVD installed in their computers which can simply act as data storage devices. Your options are limitless in what you can place on a DVD disc.
Where MPEG-2 video files are to be incorporated, DVD-Video authoring tools will also be required to encode the audio and video, add navigation and create the VOB files. Suggested platform for this process would be Sonic Solution’s DVD package, or Apple’s DVD Studio Pro.

DVD-9 NOTES
Please be advised that DVD-9 requires 2 masters (one for each layer) it is very important that the masters are identified correctly at the onset of the project. To avoid any confusion or mix ups we would prefer that you use the following formula when identifying all parts coming to MJK DP.

  • Side A or 1 corresponds to the master that contains layer 0. Maximum capacity for this layer is 4.25GB
  •  Side B or 2 corresponds to the master that contains layer 1. Maximum capacity for this layer is 4.25GB
  • The disc has to be formatted as a DVD-9 so that the layer change flags etc. are taken into account. Also, the direction of scan for the second layer has to be specified… OTP or PTP.

DVD-10 NOTES
Please be advised that DVD-10 requires 2 masters and 2 sets of films(for the disc art) and that it is very important that the films and masters are identified correctly at the onset of the project. To avoid any confusion or mix ups we would prefer that you use the following formula when identifying all parts coming to MJK DP.

  • Side A or 1 corresponds to the master that contains layer 0. Maximum capacity for this layer is 4.7GB
  •  Side B or 2 corresponds to the master that contains layer 1. Maximum capacity for this layer is 4.7GB

If at all possible both the films and masters must be identified as thus:
Example: reference: BIBLIO

FILM 1 : BIBLIO 0 = MASTER ( LAYER 0)

FILM 2 : BIBLIO 1 = MASTER ( LAYER 1)

With the parts labeled as such we will be able to ensure that when the DVD 10 is placed in the player with the label BIBLIO 1 – The content will indeed be the data of side 1 or A etc.

<%@ include file=”/includes/back-to-top.jspf” %>

Pre-mastering and testing

The authored files that you create are finalized using software that is designed to format the data using the UDF Bridge file system and according to the DVD specification.

For a hybrid disc, the DVD-Video and/or DVD-Audio files must be contained in the appropriate directories.

This finalizing process will result in a disc image, which should then be written to DLT (Digital Linear Tape) or DVD-R (DVD recordable) for archival transport to our Pre-Mastering work station. MJK DP is able to make final “check discs” for testing purposes (additional charges apply).

DVD-R check disc capacity is 4.7 GB.
MJK Disc Productions accepts your DVD-R disc as final DVD masters. We do not however accept DVD-RAM discs. Please contact MJK DP for the latest news and information concerning DVD mastering.

Manufacturing DVD discs

The manufacturing process is similar to that of CD-ROM where as a glass “stamper” is formed in order to produce a nickel “stamper”, which in turn makes the DVD discs.

The final DVD disc can be a DVD-5, DVD-10 or DVD-9 depending on the data size and whether a double-sided disc is acceptable. DVD-9 and DVD-10 discs will require two DLTs, one for each side/layer

DVD-51 to 5 colors, including one background color printed on the entire printing area
DVD-91 to 5 colors, including one background color printed on the entire printing area
DVD-101 to 2 colors Ring Label Only(since the disc is playable onboth sides like a vinyl record)

Colors

MJK DP can reproduce any color from the Pantone Color Formula Guide 1000 as well as the Pantone Metallic Color Guide. We do not print matte colors.

We strongly suggest that you do not use any fluorescent colors since they rapidly loose their luster.

Please be aware that slight color deviations may occur between color printed on a white surface and the same color printed on the DVD aluminum colored surface. This is due to aluminum reflecting light (the color might seem darker on the disc than on white paper).

Screen area

Please see our templates section for printable areas.

MJK DP thrives on offering the best service to our customers. We believe that DVD is set to become the all-embracing optical disc format of the future. In addition to our DVD pre-mastering and disc manufacturing services, we also provide information and advice to our customers where and when they need.
